Report: Ex-cop fired over 100 rounds at police in SD standoff

<img src="http://police-praetorian.netdna-ssl.com/article-images/londonart.jpg" align="right">BRULE COUNTY, S.D. — A nearly two-day standoff in a South Dakota town resulted in one highway patrol officer shot and a father-son pair arrested.

According to documents obtained by KSFY and the Argus Leader, police first responded to the scene Wednesday after learning that 42-year-old Donald London was loading weapons into his vehicle and planned to travel to the city of Chamberlain to kill police. London had made a phone call to the Brule County Sheriff's Office detailing his plans.

As officers responded to the scene in rural Kimball, London, a former police officer, opened fire on two South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers. Sgt. John Koenig was struck in the arm and the side.

London, along with his father, 66-year-old Michael London, then holed up in a residence as 132 law enforcement officers from surrounding counties engaged in the standoff, the Argus Leader reported.

More than 100 rounds were fired at police over the course of the standoff. Officers reportedly fired less than a dozen rounds in response.

Michael London surrendered and was taken into custody late Wednesday. Donald London remained in the home until the following afternoon.

"It may have been the most intense fire fight in the nation this year," Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether said at a conference. The city’s police were one of multiple agencies involved in the standoff.

Sgt. Koening, a 28-year veteran officer, was transported to a hospital after the shooting and was released on Monday.

Donald London, charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder of a police officer, served as a cop in Wyoming from 1998-1999, according to the Daily Republic. His career ended after he was sentenced to five months in prison for passing a counterfeit bill.

Michael London has been charged as an accessory to the crimes.
